No, It's Not a Stuffed Animal: Shopping for Teddies, Slips, Robes, and Lingerie for Someone Else

Today's the first of February, which means one thing and one thing only: Valentine's Day and its attendant expectations are upon us. Picking the right thing can feel like crossing one's own personal Rubicon, a decision so daunting that it may lead to the creation of the Roman Empire. It's not quite that irrevocable (we do take returns, with tags and receipt, for fourteen days after purchase), but you do want to tread carefully. With that in mind, we put together a helpful guide for buying lingerie for someone else.

First things first: size. People are, as a rule, really bad at guessing sizes, so just don't guess. Sneak a peak at the label of a garment your beloved likes to wear and write it down. Better yet, snap a photo of the tags of a few things. Bring in a photo of them in a normal outfit so we have a sense of their height and body type. We're good guessers, but we can't read your mind. When you say "she's medium height", does that mean she's 5'4" or 5'9"? Getting the right size is clutch, so do a little homework before you come in.

Is your person...fashion forward? twee? a comfort monster? a budding burlesque star? Think a little bit about their style so we can guide you toward a sweet pastel baby doll embroidered with peonies rather than a strappy faux-leather set.

What about color and material? Take a look at what your partner wears often. A lot of black lace? We've got that. Loves jewel tones and satin? No problem. Tends toward bright colors and sheer mesh? We've got that, too. Regardless of fabric or hue, we've got something pretty that'll be just the thing. What you like matters, too, so if you have a reference image of a piece you saw or you're looking to recreate a look they had before, tell us about it!

Lastly, have an idea of what you want to spend when you come in. We've got things to fit almost any budget, but we don't want to get too far afield of what you have in mind. If you're still unsure, there's always the option of a gift card. Come see us and our knowledge staff help you figure something out, whatever your situation!
